American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation Scholarships
The American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation gives scholarships to support graduate students who demonstrate academic achievement and promise. Lizzy Lydon and Shraddha Shende, PhD students in the AANCL lab, received the 2021 Graduate Student Scholarship. Congrats!
2021 Walk To end Alzheimer’s
This year, The Aging and Neurocognition Lab & friends were joined by members of the Human Factors and Aging Lab at the Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Champaign-Urbana! We were one of the 72 teams walking to show support for the cause. There was a great turnout at the event (we practiced CDC guidelines for COVID) despite the rain! Drs. Mudar, Rogers and Nguyen awarded $450,000 grant!
Drs. Mudar, Rogers, and Nguyen have been awarded funding for their new research project titled, “Integrating Voice-Activation Technology with a Social Engagement Platform for Older Adults with and Without Mild Cognitive Impairment in Assisted Living”. This grant is a partnership between Drs. Mudar and Rogers at the University of Illinois and lab alumni, Dr. Lydia Nguyen at iN2L. The project is funded by the National Institute on Aging through a Phase I Small Business Innovation Research Grant ($450K). The aims of the project are to integrate voice-activation technology with social engagement features on the iN2L digital platform and conduct rigorous usability testing with older adults with and without mild cognitive impairment is assisted living communities. Sarah wins SPARC Award!
Sarah has been awarded the prestigious American Speech-Language-Hearing Associations’ 2021 Students Preparing for Academic Research Careers (SPARC) Award! This award will help support her research on social engagement in the caregivers of persons with dementia. She will be awarded $1000 to implement her research. Congratulations on this big achievement Sarah, we are proud of you!
Drs. Mudar, Raj, and Rogers Awarded Grant!
Drs. Mudar, Raj, and Rogers have been awarded a 18-month grant ($144K) from the Retirement Research Foundation for Aging for the project “Video Technology-based Social Engagement Intervention for Family Care Partners of Persons with Dementia.” The overall objective of this project is to test the benefits of a video technology-based social engagement intervention for family care partners of persons with dementia. Care partners will receive social engagement opportunities on topics of interest (e.g., hobbies, traditions) unrelated to caregiving and the benefits of the intervention on care partners’ social, emotional, and cognitive health and quality of life will be assessed. Congratulations!!

Shraddha awarded a UIUC Dissertation Completion Fellowship!
Shraddha has been awarded a UIUC Graduate College Dissertation Completion Fellowship. This competitive fellowship is given based on the significance of the dissertation research and academic productivity and progress. It will provide Shraddha with a one-year stipend allowing her to focus on her dissertation work. You can read more about the fellowship here
